The problem
Shopify only shows the discount field once checkout has started. A shopper holding a code who sees nowhere to enter it in the cart may leave to look for it, and not come back.
The solution
How it works

Enable the field
In the theme editor, open Theme settings > Cart and tick the discount code option. It is on by default.

Test a code
Apply a code in the cart drawer or on the cart page and check the new total.

Does the code still apply at checkout?
Yes. The code is applied to the cart itself, so it carries through to checkout and the shopper never types it twice.
What happens with an invalid code?
The field shows an error message and the cart total stays as it was.
