Best Shopify themes for small business in 2026: budget friendly & high-converting
Summarize this article with AI
Starting a Shopify online store with limited funds doesn’t necessitate compromising on the quality of your storefront.
The Trafik Plus team has helped numerous entrepreneurs and small businesses in establishing professional Shopify stores within their budget constraints. In this article, we’ll share our insights on maximizing the value of your theme investment.
Full disclosure: we build Shopify themes and apps, and Cama, ranked first below, is ours. Every other theme on this list comes from another developer. Prices, ratings and review counts come from each theme’s Shopify Theme Store listing as of September 2026. Check the listing before you buy, since developers update them.
The True Cost of a “Free” Theme vs. a Paid Theme
A free theme costs nothing on day one. The bill arrives later, in apps. Shopify’s free themes cover the basics well, but features that drive sales, such as countdown timers, bundle offers, product hotspots, back-in-stock alerts or advanced upsells, often mean installing an app. Most of those apps charge every month.
A paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store works the other way around. You pay once, usually between $100 and $500, and the theme keeps receiving updates from its developer at no extra cost. Many of the conversion features you would otherwise rent from apps are already built in.
Here is how the two options compare over the first year:
Free theme | Budget paid theme ($100–$300) | |
|---|---|---|
Upfront cost | $0 | $100–$300, paid once |
Updates | Free, from Shopify | Free, from the developer |
Conversion features | Basic; the rest through apps | Many built in (quick buy, upsells, timers, swatches) |
Monthly app spend to fill gaps | Often one or more subscriptions | Lower, since fewer apps are needed |
Support | Shopify Help Center and community | Direct support from the theme developer |
Stand out from other stores | Hard: thousands of stores use the same free themes | Easier: presets and sections are less common |
The math is simple. A single app at $15 a month costs $180 a year, which is already more than several themes on this list. If your free theme needs two or three apps to do what a paid theme does out of the box, the paid theme pays for itself within months.
Every paid theme on the Shopify Theme Store can also be tried for free, for as long as you like, before you publish it. You only pay when you make it your live theme. There is no reason to buy blind.

Cama
Cama is the theme we designed for DTC brands that want to launch fast and sell from day one. It has been actively maintained since 2023 and ships with more than 20 reusable sections, so you can build a homepage, a product story and a landing page from the same set of pieces. It is built mobile-first and for speed, which matters because most small-business traffic arrives on a phone.
- Price: $240 (one-time)
- Developer: Trafik Plus
- Theme Store rating: 86% positive (7 reviews)
- Presets: Cama, Vanity, Critter
- Best for: Direct-to-consumer brands in home, jewelry and accessories, and beauty
Why it made the list: Cama packs the conversion features a small store usually pays apps for: quick buy and quick view, a slide-out cart, cross-selling and recommended products, a countdown timer, product badges, promo popups, pre-order and in-store pickup. Merchandising is covered with color swatches, swatch filters, image galleries, product videos and a before/after image slider. It is translated into English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and supports right-to-left languages, so selling across Europe does not require a translation app. You pay once and every update is free.
Watch out for: Cama has fewer Theme Store reviews than older themes on this list, so read them alongside the free trial. It suits catalogs of up to a few hundred products rather than very large inventories.

Xtra
Xtra is one of the most-reviewed themes in its price range. Its developer advertises more than 50 premium features built in, with the goal of replacing apps you would otherwise pay for.
- Price: $150 (one-time)
- Developer: Someone You Know
- Theme Store rating: 98% positive (402 reviews)
- Presets: Xtra, Seed, Calm, Vault, Rover
- Best for: Merchants who want the most features for the price
Why it made the list: Bulk upsells to raise average order value, gift wrapping, pre-orders, quick view, a slide-out cart and before/after sliders. It is translated into five EU languages. Over 400 reviews at 98% positive is a strong signal for a $150 theme.
Watch out for: With that many options, expect to spend some time in the theme editor before launch.

Blum
Blum is made for fashion. Its hotspot sections and outfit-building collections let shoppers buy a whole look from one image.
- Price: $170 (one-time)
- Developer: eComX
- Theme Store rating: 99% positive (259 reviews)
- Presets: Blum, Solie, Totem, Fuji, Monti
- Best for: Clothing and fashion brands
Why it made the list: More than 30 pre-built sections, lookbooks, image hotspots, countdown timers, promo popups and an age verifier. Its 2026 updates added pre-order support and FAQ sections.
Watch out for: The layouts lean towards fashion; a hardware or electronics store will find other themes on this list a better fit.

Maximize
Maximize is built for catalogs of 500 products and more, with faceted search and mega menus that keep a large range easy to browse.
- Price: $220 (one-time)
- Developer: Omni Themes
- Theme Store rating: 100% positive (49 reviews)
- Presets: Maximize, Vigor, Various, Swift, Tender
- Best for: Stores with a large catalog and wholesale customers
Why it made the list: Built-in B2B tools let wholesale customers see their own prices and order in bulk, and a September 2026 update added request-for-quote, age verification and combined listings. Few themes at $220 offer that.
Watch out for: If you sell a dozen products, most of what makes Maximize special will go unused.

Charge
Charge targets technical products, where shoppers compare specifications before they buy, for both B2C and B2B sales.
- Price: $170 (one-time)
- Developer: Swissuplabs
- Theme Store rating: 98% positive (59 reviews)
- Presets: Charge, Gorpcore, Garage, Metalware, Hero
- Best for: Electronics, gadgets, tools and auto parts
Why it made the list: More than 30 sales-focused sections, including upsells, promo blocks and a sticky cart, plus image hotspots and product filtering. Support comes from developers based in Europe rather than a bot.
Watch out for: Its industrial look suits hardware better than beauty, food or fashion.

Woodstock
Woodstock gives you more than 30 sections to customize without code, and a dedicated color swatch manager to control how every variant looks.

- Developer: Boostheme
- Theme Store rating: 97% positive (62 reviews)
- Presets: Woodstock, Obsidian, Vita, Dovrani
- Best for: Products sold in many colors or finishes
Why it made the list: Image zoom, hotspots, product videos, size charts and before/after sliders, on top of mega menus, infinite scroll and swatch filters.
Watch out for: At $270 it sits near the top of our budget range.

Xclusive
From the same developer as Xtra, Xclusive trades some of Xtra’s feature density for editorial layouts and bolder visuals.
- Price: $150 (one-time)
- Developer: Someone You Know
- Theme Store rating: 98% positive (170 reviews)
- Presets: Xclusive, Pace, Cozy, Deck, Voyage
- Best for: Brands that sell through imagery and storytelling
Why it made the list: Shoppable images let visitors buy tagged products straight from a photo, and five presets cover very different styles.
Watch out for: If you have few good photos yet, a more product-grid-focused theme will look better sooner.

Gain
Gain is one of the cheapest paid themes on the Theme Store, and its layouts put collections and new arrivals first.
- Price: $100 (one-time)
- Developer: UTD BV
- Theme Store rating: 91% positive (82 reviews)
- Presets: Gain, Lace, Mio, Sable, Maison
- Best for: Apparel stores with the smallest budget
Why it made the list: Promo popups, countdown timers and back-in-stock alerts for $100, with regular updates through 2026.
Watch out for: 5 of its 82 reviews are negative. Read them, and try the theme with your own products, before buying.

Allure
Allure is a newer theme from Gain’s developer, with five presets aimed at fashion and jewelry.
- Price: $100 (one-time)
- Developer: UTD BV
- Theme Store rating: 90% positive (30 reviews)
- Presets: Allure, Stitch, Carrara, Pristine, Bijou
- Best for: Fashion and jewelry on a tight budget
Why it made the list: Image hotspots, before/after sliders, countdown timers and back-in-stock alerts at the lowest paid price on the Theme Store.
Watch out for: It has fewer reviews than Gain, and one reviewer mentions needing some custom CSS to finish the design.

Horizon
Horizon is Shopify’s own free theme and the most modern one it offers, built entirely with nested theme blocks.
- Price: Free
- Developer: Shopify
- Theme Store rating: 35% positive (206 reviews)
- Presets: Horizon
- Best for: Starting with $0 and upgrading later
Why it made the list: It costs nothing, loads fast, and includes mega menus, filtering, color swatches and product videos.
Watch out for: Its Theme Store rating is low, many conversion features need apps, and your store will look like thousands of others. Budget for those apps when comparing it with a paid theme.

How to choose the right budget theme for your store
A theme is a long-term decision: switching later means rebuilding pages. Before you buy, check these points:
- Your industry. Pick a theme whose presets were designed for products like yours. A fashion theme can sell electronics, but it will take more work.
- Your catalog size. A theme built for 500+ products adds complexity a 20-product store does not need.
- Apps you would need. List the features you want, then check which ones the theme already includes. Each missing feature is probably a monthly subscription.
- Update history. Open the listing’s release notes. A theme updated regularly in 2026 keeps up with new Shopify features.
- Reviews, read in full. Look at the negative reviews and how the developer answered them. Support quality matters more than the star rating.
- Languages. If you sell in several countries, built-in translations save you an app.
- The free trial. Install the theme, add your own products and photos, and view it on your phone before paying.
A theme gets the basics right, but a few features are better handled by a dedicated app. Bundles are one of them: Snap Bundle, our bundle app, is free until its offers generate $500 in a month, so it adds bundles without adding a bill while you grow.
Our verdict
If you run a DTC brand and want a theme that is fast, translated and built to convert without a stack of apps, start with Cama. If you need the widest feature set for the least money, Xtra is hard to beat at $150. Fashion stores should look at Blum, large catalogs at Maximize, and technical products at Charge. If your budget is truly zero, Horizon will get you online, as long as you plan for the apps it will need.
Whichever you choose, use the free trial first. It costs nothing, and it is the only way to know how a theme looks with your products.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Shopify theme for a small business on a budget?
It depends on what you sell. Cama ($240) suits DTC brands, Xtra ($150) offers the most built-in features for the price, and Blum ($170) is the strongest choice for fashion. All three are one-time purchases with free updates.
Are paid Shopify themes a one-time payment?
Yes. Themes bought on the Shopify Theme Store are paid once and receive the developer’s updates for free. There is no monthly theme fee.
Can I try a paid Shopify theme before buying it?
Yes. You can add any Theme Store theme to your store and customize it for free, with no time limit. You only pay when you publish it.
Is a free Shopify theme enough for a small business?
It can be enough to launch. As the store grows, many merchants add apps for upsells, timers or bundles, and those monthly fees can quickly cost more than a paid theme.
How much does a Shopify theme cost?
Paid themes on the Shopify Theme Store cost between $100 and $500. Every theme on this list costs $270 or less, and Horizon is free.
Who makes the Cama theme?
Cama is developed by Trafik Plus, the team behind this article. It has been maintained since 2023 and is available on the Shopify Theme Store.
